Automated People Movers: Moving Through the Millennium

Abstract

  • Proceedings of the Eighth International Conference on Automated People Movers, held in San Francisco, California, July 8-11, 2001. Sponsored by Committee on Automated People Movers of the Urban Transportation Division. This collection contains 82 papers presenting the state of the art in automated people mover (APM) planning, engineering, implementation, and operation. APM technology presents opportunities for a wide range of cleaner, more efficient community centers in the future. Currently, the use of APM systems for mass transit continues to gain momentum with more than 100 installations worldwide carrying 3.5 million passengers a day safely and reliably. Topics include: airport APMs; public and private mass transit projects; urban development strategies; design and technical issues; safety issues; and alternative APM systems. Papers also explore lessons learned from scores of APM projects over the last decade.
