Publication: Automated People Movers: Moving Through the Millennium

Abstract

The Astramline, the new transit system in the city of Hiroshima, commenced operations in August 1994 as the ninth medium-volume railway-style transportation system in Japan. It functions as a major form of public transportation in the northwest part of the city. During the extended period from 1991 to 1998, the city of Hiroshima, together with the Chugoku Regional Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, conducted a systematic survey and analysis of the impact of constructing the Astramline. The purpose was to obtain basic information for promoting and developing the medium-volume railway-style transportation system. This report provides a summary of the Astramline's impact.
