Abstract
Asian cities are undertaking major urban transit projects to mitigate congestion and pollution of an enormous proportion. Some cities have implemented only light rail solutions (i.e. Manila); some have implemented a combination of light rail, rapid transit, and Automated Guideway Transit systems (i.e. Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, and Singapore). Numerous others are facing major strategic decisions regarding which type of transit technology to implement. This technology ranges from conventional light rail and subway systems to innovative Automated Guideway Transit (AGT). This paper illustrates the superior applicability of Automated Guideway Transit for Asian urban applications over elevated rapid transit systems, subways (including Japanese smaller diameter subways), and light rail transit (both at-grade and elevated) in spite of the latter's broad promotion.
