Abstract
The Clarian Health People Mover system is under construction in the downtown area of Indianapolis, Indiana based on a turnkey procurement method. One Contractor has full responsibility for the complete system that includes complex urban stations. Three stations are under construction with a fourth in the planning and design stage. The stations are totally integrated with the existing hospital buildings by a network of overhead walkways that are also included under the same turnkey contract. The overhead walkway links between two garage structures contribute to the complexity of the station as a `double decker' approach was adopted due to the station's location in the center of the street. All stations and walkways are fully enclosed and air conditioned with an architectural treatment selected to blend with the existing urban environment. The station design was highly influenced by a nearby historic apartment complex and modern Indiana University campus. This paper focuses on the difficulties and opportunities that occur in the process of integrating new, elevated People Mover stations into an existing urban setting with a variety of physical, utility, aesthetic, and political constraints.
