Abstract
The Kobe New Transit Port-Island Line (Portliner), which connects Port-Island and downtown Kobe, was the first driverless APM system in the world. When the Portliner commenced revenue service in 1981, the system was superior to other train facilities with respect to capability and reliability. Recently, after 20 years of revenue service, however, man-machine interfaces have become old-fashioned, and it has been difficult for the system to maintain a spare parts inventory. Therefore, the Kobe New Transit Company, Ltd. planned and implemented updates of two essential systems of the Portliner, the Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) system and the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system.
