Programming the Largest Airport APM—The New DFW APM

Publication: Automated People Movers: Moving Through the Millennium

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the programming studies that were performed and the results of those studies to define the overall scope of the new Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Automated People Mover. In 1997, the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) Board identified the need for a new secure automated people mover in the Airport Development Plan (ADP) Update. The ADP Update established two primary planning goals for the APM System: (1) provide a cost effective system that facilitates passenger connection and meets walk distance requirements, and (2) consider system extensions to non-terminal facilities that can be cost justified. These goals could not be met by the existing secure APM system because the system is at capacity, and cannot be extended into new terminal areas.
