Operators' Confidence in a System Safety May Become a Danger

Abstract
Fully automated transportation systems often show a good safety record, like the VAL transit system in Lille (France) after 17 years of operation without any accident due to the system or to the operators. As a consequence they are considered highly safe and reliable not only by the users and the inhabitants but also by the members of the operating staff. When faced with incidents that create delays and losses of transportation capacity, operators who have developed an excessive trust in the system may overlook the safety procedures to try to get a quicker return to full service of the system.
