Ports 2013: Success through Diversification

Abstract

  • Proceedings of PORTS '13, the 13th Triennial International Conference, held in Seattle, Washington, August 25-28, 2013. Sponsored by the Ports and Harbors Committee of the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute of ASCE and PIANC.

    This collection contains 196 peer-reviewed papers that cover the broad spectrum of factors that make ports important to their local, regional, and national communities and the wide range of missions they support, including cargo transport and economic development, recreational opportunities, and stewardship of the environment.

    Topics include: Environmental issues: climate change impacts, green infrastructure, air and water quality, habitat creation, protection, mitigation, and restoration; Equipment and systems: automation and new technologies; Waterways navigation: widening and deepening, modeling, and simulation; Port engineering and infrastructure: coastal processes, extreme events (seismic, tsunami, storm surge and waves), facilities and operations, foundations and reclamation, inspection, repair, and maintenance; Port planning and operation: facility management and master planning, urban and community interaction; Project development: construction management, design, building, finance, and operation; Terminal planning and design: container, liquid and dry bulk, cruise, ferry, and small craft facilities; and Tohoku earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011: port performance and implications for design in seismic regions.

    These papers will be of interest to both practitioners and researchers in the area of port, waterway, and harbor engineering.
