ABSTRACT
The “spatial concentration and functional separation” is a common road design model (mode A) used in many countries, which can achieve the separation of different types of traffic flows on road sections. Interferences between different types of traffic flows at intersections reduce travel efficiency and increase pollution and safety hazards. The new road design model (mode B) is explored in the study to achieve complete separation of motorized, non-motorized, and pedestrian trips. Comparisons between modes A and B under the principle of consistent road area are carried out using simulation software, and potential problems such as traffic flow adaptability are analyzed for mode B. Results show that mode B can effectively reduce the number of traffic conflict points, improve the speed and efficiency of traffic flow, reduce pollutant emissions, and the pedestrian travel system is self-contained to facilitate commuters and fitness exercise and enhance neighborhood vitality.
