ABSTRACT
This paper investigates the effect of road tunnel follow-on lighting on driving behavior based on driving simulation tests to explore the feasibility of low-flow tunnel follow-on lighting. A total of 20 sets of simulation scenarios were designed based on the combination of restricted speed and illumination range. Speed, lane offset distance, and starting point parameters were collected from 35 drivers passing through the tunnels’ straight, circular, and vertical curves of the tunnel, and driving behaviors were analyzed under different alignment conditions and different lighting ranges. The results show that the illumination range of double the stopping sight distance significantly affects the driving speed under different alignment conditions, the driver’s judgment of horizontal and vertical curve alignment, and the driver’s lane-keeping ability in the circular curve segment. Therefore, under different speed conditions, the length of freeway tunnel lighting with two times the stopping sight distance control is appropriate.
