ABSTRACT

Travel characteristics of heavy goods vehicles are an essential factor to be considered when planning and managing integrated regional transport. Due to the strong correlation between heavy goods vehicles and road maintenance, transport safety, and socioeconomics, examining the travel characteristics of regional heavy goods vehicles is of great practical importance. A data-driven travel chain identification model for heavy goods vehicles is proposed. The study identifies the travel chain of each vehicle purely objectively. It empirically analyzes the travel trajectory of heavy goods trucks from Jiangsu Province traveling in Shandong Province. Findings show (1) the main trips of Jiangsu trucks are concentrated in Linyi City, Rizhao City, Zaozhuang City, Jining City, and other provincial border cities; and (2) the freight enterprises associated with Qingdao port in Jiangsu Province mainly choose the transportation route Qingdao-Rizhao. It significantly strengthens regional regulation and policy development for heavy goods vehicles.
