Intelligent Speed Adaptation Impact of Fuel Consumption and Emission

Abstract
Excessive speed on roadway is one of main reasons which often results in accidents, high fuel consumption, and excessive vehicular emissions. ISA is an active research field in speed limitation. Recent studies have indicated that Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) provides a flexible solution to mitigate congestion, smooth traffic flow, reduce accident and improve driving safety. In addition to above improvements ISA may also lead to lower fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. This paper examines the fuel consumption and emissions impacts of ISA in detail using simulation tools and analyses difference fuel consumption and emissions between ISA vehicles and non ISA vehicles. According to the simulation result, times of acceleration and deceleration decreased as percentage of ISA vehicles increased. Since fuel consumption and emissions is related to acceleration and deceleration and speed, so fuel consumption may decrease about 8% if all vehicles adopt ISA, and emissions decrease in degree also. As a conclusion, ISA is a hopeful reductions technology for both fuel consumption and emissions without drastically affecting travel time.
