This paper gives a brief technical and institutional history of how construction equipment developed, primarily during the twentieth century. It identifies the major machine forms and describes their origins and development. It also identifies the major market forces for equipment advancement and the key organizations involved.

The factors that are considered in analyzing technical solutions and the tools used to obtain technical solutions have changed for construction engineers over the past 30 years. This paper discusses these changes and their impacts. It then outlines a process that several heavy civil contracting firms use to generate work plans for their field operations, using the details of the process at Granite Construction as an example. The paper concludes by identifying the key factors in the success of a work plan and providing some thoughts on what construction engineering education should emphasize.

Engineering has been defined as the vocation of guiding nature to produce something needed or desired. A historical review of the evolution of engineering and engineering education leads to the conclusion that sustainability in design and construction requires the engineer to approach nature with imagination and humility. As part of its Engineer of 2020 initiative, the National Academy of Engineering in 2001 questioned how engineering education should evolve to prepare the profession for the future. From that work and efforts by ASCE, it is clear that an educational system that fails to provide engineers with a broad base of learning results in graduates ill-prepared to enter professional practice. The National Academy Engineer of 2020 work and ASCE Policy Statement 465, “Academic Prerequisites for Licensure and Professional Practice,” echo a call to adopt a new educational model. The new model seeks to strengthen the cognitive ability of engineers and leads them to practices that work in cooperation and harmony with nature for the benefit of society.

Construction engineering is all about production, and producing something useful is the very reason for projects to exist. How then to explain why construction engineering has progressively fallen out of focus in construction project management education and research? For an answer, the development of the discipline of construction management since the 1950s must be understood, a development that yielded a non-production-oriented approach to project management, one that provides the currently accepted operating system for managing the work in projects. This paper first traces the history of the development of the traditional operating system and related commercial terms and organizational practices. It argues that traditional practices rest on an assumption that careful development of a project schedule, managing the critical path, and maximizing productivity within each activity will optimize project delivery in terms of cost and duration. Subsequently, an alternative operating system, developed and proposed by the Lean Construction community, is described. In contrast to the traditional approach, lean defers detailed planning until closer to the point of action, involves those who are to do the work in designing the production system and planning how to do it, aims to maximize project performance (not the pieces), and exploits breakdowns as opportunities for learning. The history of this development will be traced in broad strokes.

Design and construction markets are increasing requirements for the constructed product and how the project team delivers it. These market demands for improved infrastructure and a more sustainable built environment are increasing the importance and scope of construction engineering throughout the project development process. Concurrently, many construction degree programs face pressures to increase coverage of construction management topics, leaving less time for construction engineering. Construction research, especially related to modeling and integration, has produced new technologies and capabilities to assist with construction engineering activities. These drivers lead to the central question addressed in this paper: What are the essential core elements of construction engineering knowledge to foster successful projects and careers? The purpose of the paper is to identify these elements of knowledge and their implications, including background and support for many related topics discussed at the Construction Engineering Conference held at Virginia Tech in September 2010. After defining construction engineering on the basis of the main activities it includes, the paper identifies and describes four elements of knowledge that it requires: technical fundamentals, materials of construction, construction-applied resources, and field construction operations. The description for each type of knowledge includes examples of activities that require it. The paper also includes implications and recommendations for educators to increase coverage of construction engineering, for the industry to assist in advocating and offering relevant courses, and for researchers to further develop construction process models and other tools with potential benefits for construction engineering practice and education.

This paper uses four case studies to emphasize the fact that field engineering decisions cannot be made without a full understanding of all the technical problems involved. Two of the studies are taken from conventional design-bid-build projects and two are taken from design-build projects in which the ability to strongly influence design in the interest of construction efficiency places a new and increased emphasis on construction and field engineering skills. The cases also show that field engineering decisions frequently address new and unexpected realities, changed conditions, and transient loads, and thus they require high levels of understanding, technical analysis, and creative thought. We emphasize the need for universities and construction engineering programs to develop graduates who are capable of integrating design and construction considerations throughout the project delivery process. We also urge programs to continue to focus strongly on field engineering as the foundation for success in an increasingly complex and technically driven construction industry.

The engineers of the Inka Empire had a unique consciousness of nature—the elements that strike brute mischief on man’s structures—because the foundation of their engineering knowledge was agriculture. These engineers, with a tradition of observing nature, succeeded in building their Andean road network because they learned to work with nature instead of trying to control it by domination. Close examination and reverse engineering of the past accomplishments of these ancient engineers can lead to thoughtful solutions to current engineering challenges, particularly the effort to construct sustainable infrastructure.

In April 2006, the Panama Canal Authority formally proposed a major expansion of the canal to increase its capacity and make it more productive, safe, and efficient. This proposal included cost and schedule estimates for completing the expansion and was supported overwhelmingly by the citizens of Panama in an October 2006 public referendum. Given the conceptual level of design at the time of the proposal and the inherent uncertainty in a project of this magnitude at the early stages of engineering, a comprehensive risk analysis was performed to develop a contingency model for the total expansion program cost and schedule. This contingency model is based on a Monte Carlo simulation of the cost and schedule estimates, taking into account the most significant risks identified for the project. The resulting model provides contingency assessments for duration and total cost and sensitivity analysis of the risks; it also allows for multiple scenario planning and ultimately supports overall risk management. This paper presents a project case study that focuses on the contingency model development and the resulting risk management and contingency resolution processes.

Construction engineering for major infrastructure projects covers a wide range of activities to evaluate and select the techniques for assembling materials and components. Construction engineering inherently presents a very challenging opportunity for creative design, particularly on infrastructure projects. This construction engineering activity can be described as one of creating and developing workable, cost-effective, low-risk technical solutions for an array of infrastructure construction problems that must be solved from the plans and specifications stage through facility completion. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate a 10-step construction engineering process and define important knowledge requirements to foster creative design solutions using four case studies, including (1) positioning and holding a concrete bridge caisson in a 7-knot tidal current for a 4-month period; (2) skidding a 55,000-t immersed tube tunnel element 200 m on dry land from casting site to launch site; (3) building a major dam without the use of river diversion or on-site dewatering systems; and (4) building underwater bridge piers without the use of conventional bottom-founded cofferdams. The creative design process was able to successfully devise a plan for solving highly technical construction challenges using a process-based approach. The key requirements of knowledge, skill, and experience necessary to perform these activities are presented to assist construction engineers in preparing for these creative opportunities.

The wide range of crane types and sizes offered by the market expresses the responsiveness of the lifting industry to meet the variety of challenges posed by the built environment. One such emerging set of challenges is the outcome of the growing rate of wind turbine installation. Wind energy is one of the largest alternative energy production methods today, and as the global push for greener energy sources is increasing, so is the number of windmills. This paper addresses the unique lifting challenges posed by windmill installation and maintenance. These challenges have been met by leading crane manufacturers in various ways to produce products not seen before on the construction scene. The paper focuses on two such products representing two different concepts and provides the development and design rational of each. Engineering is impacted by unique height, lifting capacity, site preparation, and environmental requirements. The accelerated rate of global wind energy use, the increasing number, height, and component weight of turbine towers, and the persistent search for new territories for wind farms are likely to further produce more innovative solutions.

The Lampson Transi-Lift mobile crane is a lifting system purposely designed for construction activities related initially to nuclear power facilities. The combination of capacity, increased working hook height, and an unmatched radius to capacity ratio allowed for use of innovative construction techniques that decreased the construction schedule, increased facility integrity and construction safety, and reduced overall plant construction costs. The versatility of the Lampson Transi-Lift was immediately recognized, and it has become a mainstay of the heavy lift industry since its introduction in the late 1970s. Oil and gas, general construction, and offshore construction activities have all since benefitted from the unique capabilities of this heavy lift crane

Over the past 10–15 years, equipment manufacturers have addressed the issues related to the use of telematics for construction equipment, trying to provide both the customer and themselves with relevant data to improve the functionality, operation, maintenance, and management of this equipment. Each manufacturer approached this task independently with varying ideas on how to best accomplish this.

Laser scanning for rapid spatial data acquisition is an established technology in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector with a wide range of applications. An understanding of the wide variation of technical requirements and considerations associated with these applications is critical to decision making about laser-scanning implementation on projects. Furthermore, significant industry transformations in the use of building information modeling present extraordinary opportunities for AEC professionals to employ the use of laser scanning in the context of holistic, collaborative workflows grounded in three-dimensional model-based design. This report analyzes the construction engineering requirements of laser scanning technology for applications across all phases of the project life cycle and proposes a multidisciplinary framework to integrate applications of laser scanning technology with the fundamentals of three-dimensional model-based design.

This paper reapplies a statistical model that was created prior to 2003 to forecast the residual value of used heavy construction equipment in the United States. The objective is to evaluate the performance of the model in the radically changed economy in the second half of the decade. The research hypothesis addresses whether the model is still usable and functional even almost a decade after the data occurred that determined its coefficients. This existing statistical model was a comprehensive multiple linear regression analysis for various categories of common types and sizes of equipment. Manufacturer, condition rating, and auction region are included as binary indicator variables. Statistically significant macroeconomic indicators can be used directly, but they provide new challenges as various governmental data series have been discontinued or modified, so that valid replacements must be found that range until the time of the economic crisis. Performing such a reanalysis faces technical challenges, including that several macroeconomic data series since the time of the original study have been discontinued or modified by their governmental sources. Moreover, new auction sales records mostly lack conditions and are devoid of locations. Various reconstructions are explored to still enable a valid reanalysis and, on validation, are used to augment the previous data series seamlessly with new data. Expert elicitation is used to select several equipment types that are likely to be affected by the recent economic downturn. The existing implementation tool is provided with the updated data for calculating forecasted residual values that are compared statistically with actual auction sales prices. Both practical and numerical problems are identified. The model consistently underestimates the actual values, indicating that they are less affected by the economic crisis or new variability is introduced from reconstructing its inputs. It is recommended that such model should be regularly updated, ideally by a professional organization.

Professionals in the construction industry must be able to accurately forecast costs. Doing so not only helps assure reasonable profits for companies, but it can also help ensure that projects are delivered within budget for clients. Forecasting of equipment repair costs is one element of the larger problem of predicting overall costs. The cumulative cost model can provide construction engineers with a valuable tool for better understanding the nature of repair costs as they relate to production fleets. Data that are being collected (or that could be collected) can assist in the determination of the rate of accumulation of repair costs for a machine for a given period of use or the estimation of fleet repair budgets for a job or period. There are two different methodologies for constructing the repair cost portion of the cumulative cost model: life-to-date (LTD) repair costs and the period-cost-based (PCB) model. This paper will provide the steps and background for each of these two methodologies and compare them using a practical example.

Earthmoving and construction equipment have evolved significantly during the past century. During the same time, our ability to study and understand equipment economics and productivity has also gained significant ground. This paper relates some of the recent academic research to industry practices. In doing so, it validates some parts of the research and makes new observations in three areas: repair costs, residual values, and total cost of ownership (TCO) and productivity. It also provides a few pointers for future research.

Improvements in construction engineering education result when innovative information technologies are incorporated into academic curricula. Through the use of internet-based communication technologies, no longer must students physically travel to a construction project site to observe and hear construction operations. This paper discusses two applications of internet-based, audio and video technologies currently being piloted at Iowa State University (ISU) and at the University of Calgary (UC) for the purpose of bringing live construction projects into the university classroom. Virtual Project Tours have been piloted at Iowa State University in which real-time video and audio are delivered from active construction projects to a remote classroom through the internet. The second application discussed in this paper, Virtual Supervision, is being piloted at the University of Calgary and consists of the monitoring and analysis of construction projects by using imagery gathered by web-enabled, digital cameras of fixed location transmitting video through the internet. This paper also presents a vision of a globally networked organization of engineering and construction education institutions each sharing the unique engineering and building techniques of their respective part of the globe with design and construction students located around the world. This exchange of construction project observations among the institutions will be enabled by the internet-based applications of virtual project tours and virtual supervision systems described in this paper.

Those working within the domain of construction engineering—the planning and management of the construction of infrastructure assets—today employ a wide range of information technology tools. The vast majority of these tools are used on desktop computers processing tabular information associated with scheduling, tracking, updating statuses, reporting, and similar tasks. In spite of the significant penetration of information technology into construction engineering, there is little direct reuse of the engineering information created during the design phase. Likewise, access to rich engineering information and applications to exploit this information have yet to be extended to mobile workers on the construction jobsite in any significant way. This paper explores a sampling of some of the emerging information technology tools that may be effectively applied to support construction engineering in the field.

Construction simulation, a fast-growing field, is the science of developing and experimenting with computer-based representations of construction systems to understand their underlying behavior. This paper provides a history of construction simulation theory, explores the CYCLONE modeling methodology and its major subsequent developments, examines the development of the Simphony.NET and COSYE modeling environments and their functionality as more generic simulation platforms, and reviews effective strategies for applying simulation in construction. A construction simulation case study is presented that illustrates one successful approach for adopting simulation technology in the industry and outlines the benefits to industry of integrating these technologies. The paper provides an overview of long-term simulation initiatives leading to the next generation of computer modeling systems for construction, where simulation plays an integral role in a futuristic vision of automated project planning and control.

Field construction can be planned, monitored, and controlled at two distinct levels: (1) the activity or schedule level; and (2) the operation or process level. Graphical three-dimensional (3D) visualization can serve as an effective communication method at both levels. Many research efforts in visualizing construction are rooted in scheduling. They typically involve linking activity-based construction schedules and 3D computer-aided design (CAD) models of facilities to describe discretely evolving construction product visualizations (often referred to as four-dimensional CAD). The focus is on communicating what components are built where and when, with the intention of studying the optimal activity sequence, spatial, and temporal interferences. The construction processes or operations actually involved in building the components are usually implied. A second approach in visualizing construction is rooted in discrete-event simulation that, in addition to visualizing evolving construction products, also concerns the visualization of the operations and processes that are performed in building them. In addition to what is built where and when, the approach communicates who builds it and how by depicting the interaction between involved machines, resources, and materials. This paper introduces the two approaches and describes the differences in concept, form, and content between activity level and operations level construction visualization. An example of a structural steel framing operation is presented to elucidate the comparison. This work was originally published in the proceedings of the 2002 IEEE Winter Simulation Conference. This paper expands on the original work by describing recent advances in both activity and operations level construction visualization.

Data fusion can be defined as the process of combining data or information for estimating the state of an entity. Data fusion is a multidisciplinary field that has several benefits, such as enhancing the confidence, improving reliability, and reducing ambiguity of measurements for estimating the state of entities in engineering systems. It can also enhance completeness of fused data that may be required for estimating the state of engineering systems. Data fusion has been applied to different fields, such as robotics, automation, and intelligent systems. This paper reviews some examples of recent applications of data fusion in civil engineering and presents some of the potential benefits of using data fusion in civil engineering.

Collection of accurate, complete, and reliable field data is not only essential for active management of construction projects involving various tasks, such as material tracking, progress monitoring, and quality assurance, but also for facility and infrastructure management during the service lives of facilities and infrastructure systems. Limitations of current manual data collection approaches in terms of speed, completeness, and accuracy render these approaches ineffective for decision support in highly dynamic environments, such as construction and facility operations. Hence, a need exists to leverage the advancements in automated field data capture technologies to support decisions during construction and facility operations. These technologies can be used not only for acquiring data about the various operations being carried out at construction and facility sites but also for gathering information about the context surrounding these operations and monitoring the workflow of activities during these operations. With this, it is possible for project and facility managers to better understand the effect of environmental conditions on construction and facility operations and also to identify inefficient processes in these operations. This paper presents an overview of the various applications of automated field data capture technologies in construction and facility fieldwork. These technologies include image capture technologies, such as laser scanners and video cameras; automated identification technologies, such as barcodes and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags; tracking technologies, such as Global Positioning System (GPS) and wireless local area network (LAN); and process monitoring technologies, such as on-board instruments (OBI). The authors observe that although applications exist for capturing construction and facility fieldwork data, these technologies have been underutilized for capturing the context at the fieldwork sites as well as for monitoring the workflow of construction and facility operations.

This paper follows “Construction Engineering: Reinvigorating the Discipline.” That paper argued that a new flow-based operating system was poised to replace the activity-centered operating system of traditional project management and that a coherent organizational and contractual approach would evolve. Shifting to a new operating system based on the theory, principles, and practices of production system design will reduce waste, spur learning and innovation, and deliver more value to clients and other participants. After a reflection on a model for making sense, the paper explores the consequences of this shift from a number of perspectives and speculates on the impact on practice and research. The paper closes with a brief reflection on teaching in times of rapid change.

The needs of the construction industry require that an appropriate balance be provided between construction engineering topics and management topics in both education and research. Because construction is less mature as a research area compared to other areas in civil engineering, limitations on research funding have made the investigation of construction management topics more feasible in comparison to construction engineering topics. Because faculty members are drawn from the pool of Ph.D. students who have primarily researched management topics, there has been a tendency for them to continue emphasis on management topics in both education and research. Other civil engineering disciplines form their research programs around the needs of design codes and standards’ development, and academic participation is high. Similar efforts exist within construction engineering; however, there is less academic participation. It is suggested that greater effort be invested in the improvement of construction process standards and specifications so that construction engineering research efforts can advance construction process standards and stimulate increased engineering educational exposure. It is also suggested that academics who are interested in construction engineering research should consider participating in the specification improvement processes that occur at the national and state levels. A process for wider participation in construction engineering research and standards development is recommended.

The replacement of the Thames River Railroad Bridge between Groton and New London, Connecticut, was a challenging task on many levels, some of them anticipated, some of them not. The effort culminated with an outage that stopped the most heavily used passenger rail service in the United States for 4 days and blocked navigation for industrial and national defense waterway users. Unanticipated foundation problems added an additional set of challenges. All challenges were successfully overcome with a spirit of cooperation and innovation by all involved. Advances in information technology after completion of the project led to the discovery of lost information that could have warned the project team of problems to come had that knowledge been available at the start of the project.

In today’s world of specialization, civil engineers may benefit from a return to an earlier period when breadth of knowledge, skills, and attitudes were appreciated: the Renaissance era. A broad set of skills is especially important in meeting the challenges of restoring deteriorating infrastructure and working with restricted financing. This paper presents the case of the Golden Gate Bridge Seismic Retrofit Phase II Project to illustrate how important it is for civil engineers to possess solid technical expertise coupled with a cross-disciplinary knowledge of design and construction to achieve project success. These qualities allowed the engineers to integrate construction knowledge into the design process and design knowledge into the construction process, in spite of the project’s traditional design-bid-build delivery method. Of equal importance to the success were the engineers’ commitment, integrity, and persistence. The Phase II Project involved modifying the 70-year-old bridge’s five south approach structures. By applying modern earthquake engineering standards, these structures are now capable of withstanding a seismic event comparable to the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. The final outcome was a complex yet cost-efficient seismic upgrade of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, a project that was constructed within budget and without claims. In 2007, the project received the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Outstanding Civil Engineering Award.

In this paper, we provide a brief overview of the historical underpinnings of the design-construction industry and the development of design engineering and construction engineering as independent but related subdisciplines of civil engineering. The effects of the first and second generation of computer tools on design engineering are identified. The complementary and evolving definitions of construction engineering and design engineering are examined, specifically in the context of structural design engineering activities and deliverables and the corresponding construction engineering activities and deliverables. The concept of an “engineering continuum” is introduced, and the process is recast in light of that concept. Several case studies are used to examine the promise of third generation design-construction computing technologies such as virtual design and construction and their potential beneficial impact on the cost and schedule of the typical design-construction project. Refinements to the definitions of construction and design engineering that have the potential to maximize the benefits of third generation technology are proposed with an eye toward the form of fourth generation computing technologies that are on the horizon.

This lecture addresses the balance between teaching and learning and explores the notion that “we teach too much and our students learn too little.” Research in the areas of teaching and learning, in addition to personal experience in construction education, are used to show how appropriate teaching styles and a learner centered approach can be combined to improve learning and reinforce the belief that the true goal of education should be to produce self-motivated, independent lifelong learners. Data from an informal study of student perceptions are presented to show that much is achieved when faculty make it possible for students to be independent active learners and accept responsibility for their own learning.
