Exploring Urban Spatial Structure of Residence and Employment in Shenzhen: Based on Mobile Signaling Data

ABSTRACT
This paper aims to analyze the spatial structure of residential and employment areas in the context of polycentric urban development using mobile phone signaling data. The study examines the spatial distribution and morphological centrality of residential and employment centers, utilizing employment and population size. The functional centrality index, derived from relative degree and network density, is used to reveal the functional connectivity characteristics of these centers. The study also applies the rank-size method to assess the equilibrium of functional and morphological centrality, enabling a comparison of the development levels of polycentric structures in residential and employment contexts. The findings indicate that Shenzhen’s residential and employment spatial configuration exhibit functional polycentricity and morphological monocentricity. Notably, the residential arrangement is more polycentric than employment in both morphological and functional dimensions. The study provides insights into the spatial structural differences between housing and employment and the potential for bridging the gap between them.
