Network Modeling and Characterization of Unsafe Behaviour in Fall-from-Height Accidents in Construction

ABSTRACT
Unsafe behaviour is the main cause of fall-from-height accidents in construction. However, few studies have focused on the interactions between multiple unsafe behaviours of workers in high fall accidents. Research on the identification of key unsafe behaviours in interactions from a systems perspective is lacking. Therefore, a network-based method of construction workers’ unsafe behaviours in fall-from-height accidents is proposed. Firstly, 122 high-falling accidents related to workers’ unsafe behaviours in China were collected and 54 types of unsafe behaviors in 14 categories were obtained. After that, a network model reflecting the relation between different unsafe behaviours was constructed based on complex network theory. Using the LinkRank algorithm, five key unsafe behaviours and ten key behaviour chains in high fall accidents were identified. The study reveals the correlation between multiple unsafe behaviours in fall-from-height accidents, which provides an important reference for reducing human-caused errors and preventing accidents.
