ABSTRACT
Signal control is a prominent method of urban intersection traffic control. However, the traffic condition is highly dynamic, and the efficacy loss happens all the time. Therefore, the signal control performance evaluation is a necessary step in the signal control design procedure. It gives feedback and guides the optimization of traffic control strategies and timing plans. In recent years, the emergence of high-resolution vehicle trajectory data has broadened the control performance evaluation dimension. This paper introduces the definition of travel demand and progress supply, then presents a traffic signal control performance evaluation system and the calculating procedure based on two indices: (i) the demand-supply matching index (DMSI); and (ii) the demand-supply time-space matching index (DMSI-TS), using high-resolution trajectory data. The indices can demonstrate the time-space resource allocation and utilization level. The effectiveness of the performance indices and the feasibility of the calculating procedure were tested by the NGSIM data.
