ABSTRACT
Intersection congestion is a major problem in traffic control that needs to be solved. This study investigates the adaptive signal control at an isolated intersection based on full trajectory data to better allocate the temporal resources at intersections. In particular, the fluctuated left-turn ratio of vehicles is considered, which is critical to signal to time. The left-turn likelihood of each vehicle is predicted by the Bayesian method, and the predicted aggregate left-turn ratio is the input parameter of the adaptive signal control algorithm. The goal of adaptive signal optimization is to minimize the maximum queue length under the fluctuated predicted volumes. Dynamic programming is used for solutions. The results show that the proposed method can reduce the maximum queue length and average vehicle delay by an average of 5.5% and 36.8%, respectively.
