ABSTRACT
Due to special structure of tunnels, the risk of serious traffic crashes on tunnel sections may be higher than that on open road sections. Thus, this study compared the factors affecting the severity of tunnel traffic crashes and those of non-tunnel traffic crashes. Using traffic crash data of Shanxi Province from 2014 to 2020, two multinomial logit models were established for tunnel and non-tunnel traffic crashes. Compared with non-tunnel traffic crashes, tunnel traffic crashes with long duration or involving coach bus have a higher probability of injury or fatality. Finally, suggestions for alleviating the severity of tunnel traffic crashes were recommended.
