Pseudo-Static Stability Analysis of Vertically Expanded MSW Landfill with Engineered Berm

Publication: Geo-Congress 2023

ABSTRACT

Landfill expansion is the best alternative to building new landfills due to the scarcity of land and a high rise in land cost. In the present study, the seismic stability analysis of the expanded landfill is carried out using the pseudo-static limit equilibrium method. As the municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill is highly heterogeneous, this study considered the variation of the unit weight of the landfill with depth under seismic conditions. Closed-form analyses are performed to determine the factor of safety under under-berm failure (failure surface passes under berm bottom). It is observed that with an increase in the height of the berm, the factor of safety also increased. With the rise in both horizontal and vertical seismic acceleration, the factor of safety decreases for under berm conditions.
