Overtopping of Highway 1 and Embankment Erosion

Abstract
This chapter discusses the overtopping of Highway 1 and the analyses used to assess the size and volume of the roadway failure following the downslope embankment erosion. For this analysis, the 2016 1 m resolution LiDAR dataset available by the USGS 3DEP was used for the terrain “before” the failure and the February 3, 2021, LiDAR dataset 10 cm resolution, available from Caltrans, was used the terrain “after” the failure. These datasets were differenced to estimate the volume of embankment eroded and deposited at the slope toe. Digital elevation model differencing was conducted to estimate the amount of eroded embankment material. For the differencing the digital surface models, before and after the failure were used.
