Upstream Collection Basin and Debris Volumes
Publication: Highway 1 Rat Creek Embankment Failure: 2021 Reconnaissance and Analysis
Abstract
The “upstream collection basin” is an area that extended from the highway up Rat Creek and had an overall lower elevation than the roadway crest. This created a collection area where water and debris could accumulate if the culvert capacity was exceeded during a storm event. Analyses were conducted to assess the basin's size. In particular, the size was estimated using the amount of water needed to fill it and then relating volume to the size of the debris flow. A unit hydrograph was constructed to quantify the normalized volume of water reaching the culvert through time. Once a unit hydrograph is constructed, it is scaled by rainfall measurements to obtain a hydrograph representing the amount of flow and water volume reaching the location of interest, in this case Highway 1.
