Identification and Evaluation of Urban Public Centers from Temporal and Spatial Perspectives: A Case Study of Six Districts in Guangzhou

ABSTRACT

Urban public centers are important parts of every city. The rational layout of the multi-level public center system has been significant content of city comprehensive planning and district planning. Thus, it’s critical to have a precise identification and evaluation of public centers. Based on the GIS, taking six districts in Guangzhou as cases, a spatiotemporal perspective was introduced to research on the identification and measurement of public centers. Methodologically, a three-step measurement system was put forward, including identification, verification, and evaluation, followed by field research in several sample areas based on OD as well as POIs data. During the process of identification, the degree of mixing of POIs and commercial building volume were calculated. The initial identification result was then verified with OD data as well as customers’ reviews in Dianping app. Finally, the field research studies were used to evaluate different levels and types of urban public centers, which helped establish a more efficient and high-quality public center system and refine the city management.
