Crossing an 8,800-Foot Wide Body of Water to Get Long-Term Water Supply to Limestone County
Publication: Pipelines 2018: Condition Assessment, Construction, and Rehabilitation
ABSTRACT
The Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority (LCWSA) is a water and sewer utility that serves more than 21,000 customers in Limestone County, AL, and surrounding areas in north central Alabama. On average, they provide 8 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to their customers. However, in order to meet the current and future demands for water in their rapidly developing service area, the LCWSA knew that a large-scale construction project was inevitable. After years of planning, budgeting, and coordinating with local, state, and federal authorities, the decision was made to install a large diameter water transmission line that would allow Limestone County to purchase water from nearby Decatur, AL, which happens to be on the other side of the Tennessee River. Upon completion, the new line will allow the LCWSA to purchase an additional 15–20 MGD from Decatur Utilities. The project came to be known as the Decatur to Limestone County Water Transmission Line, and was awarded to Garney Companies, Inc. in April of 2016.
