Abstract
Superstorm Sandy destroyed the Rockaways Boardwalk on the Atlantic Coast of the Borough of Queens in New York City. The boardwalk was a 7.5 km long structure, with an average width of 9 m, running from Beach 20th Street to Beach 126th Street. The wooden boardwalk deck was lifted off of their concrete foundations, and some of the access stairways and ramps were washed away. All that remained in most locations was the boardwalk foundation; concrete piles and pile caps that had supported what the community had referred to as its “front street.”
