Chapter 32
Environmental, Social, and Political Issues in Water Resources Management
Authors: S. Bala Prasad and Prakasam TataAuthor Affiliations
Publication: Sustainable Water Resources Management
Abstract
This chapter overviews global and Indian water resources and discusses environmental, social, and political issues related to water resources management in India. To address socioeconomic problems, including integrated water resources management (IWRM) in major policies, acts, and guidelines of any region or nation is necessary. IWRM ultimately serves as the basis for meeting current water demand from various sectors for either sustenance or growth. IWRM must be applied to protect, conserve, and restore water resources, which is part of environmental protection. IWRM processes minimize water resources degradation resulting from unsustainable exploitation, often for short-term gain. A thorough assessment of social issues will be of great value during the planning and subsequent implementation of IWRM policies, projects, and systems.
