Abstract
This chapter proposes a framework for a water sustainability index that is based on the reliability-resilience-vulnerability concept, which in turn utilizes the reconnaissance drought index (RDI). A case study of Yamuna-Hindon interfluve illustrates the methodology. The sustainability indicators used in the chapter to quantify aridity and drought are UNEP-AI and RDI respectively. These indices are functions of precipitation and evapotranspiration—the most important components of the hydrological cycle, especially when drought is concerned. Drought indices can provide essential information regarding the nature and quantization of drought events, which subsequently can be very useful in planning, development, and management of water resources. The chapter discusses the geographical details of the study area, hydrometeorological data used, bias correction of downscaled data, estimation of evapotranspiration, and computation of RDI and the water sustainability index (WSI).
