Abstract
Cloud seeding is a technology for obtaining water resources and aims to enhance precipitation (rainfall, snowfall) by modifying microphysical features and associated dynamics in clouds. This chapter describes the history of cloud seeding, the mechanism of natural precipitation, fundamental cloud seeding techniques, and statistical and physical evaluation of cloud seeding effects. It also describes remarkable features of observed signals induced by cloud seeding, based on results from several liquid carbon dioxide seeding experiments suggested by Fukuta. The WMO recommends that significant features of moisture supplied into a target area and associated climatology of cloud and precipitation must be fully investigated for successful cloud seeding strategies. Finally, the chapter describes features of typical winter atmospheric conditions that provide enough water resources for agricultural and industrial activities and human life and atmospheric conditions causing disastrously heavy snowfall in Japan.
