Abstract
Geospatial technologies such as remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS) are promising tools for satellite-based rainfall and atmospheric water vapor estimation over arid regions. An important advantage of such technologies over traditional gauge rainfall estimation is their ability to provide spatial distribution of rainfall data in the form of maps. Hence, validation of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite data with gauge rainfall data shows a very good overall agreement. Precipitable water vapor (PWV) of the atmosphere column is measured with sensors/instruments on different platforms. Moderate resolution imaging spectrometer (MODIS) is an efficient satellite sensor capable of measuring atmospheric column water vapor. It is a sun-synchronous earth-viewing satellite sensor placed at an altitude of 705 km onboard earth-observing system (EOS) Terra and Aqua satellites.
