Abstract
This chapter highlights satellite measuring techniques, specifically from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), and their efficiency in arid environments given that such areas lack rain data. TRMM’s main goal is to understand the global water and energy cycle by measuring tropical rainfall and latent heat. The TRMM is considered the first space-borne radar system for precipitation estimation and provides continuous precipitation information over the tropics. TRMM-estimated rainfall data have proved to be qualified data that can be used to generate climate models and perform severe storm studies. The chapter also presents a case study to validate satellite rainfall by using data from 15 rain gauges measured in hyper-arid, arid, and semi-arid regions of Sudan. Rainfall performance is assessed at each station and in the three regions as well.
