With the rapid development of urbanization and motorization, urban transportation planning is turning on a new trend in both its goal orientation and development patterns. This paper systematically collates the goals of the recent comprehensive transportation planning in 51 domestic cities and all these objectives are divided into 3 "Major Objectives," 19 "Classification Objectives," and 45 "Sub Objectives" in terms of "Transportation Participant (People)," "Transportation System (Vehicle, Road),"and "External Environment." Counting the occurrence frequency of Classification Objectives gives us a conclusion that planning goals on "Sustainable Development," "High Efficiency," "Integration," "Public Transport Priority Development," and"Security" are listed on the top five. Then, according to this frequency statistics of Classification Objectives, we analyze the differences in the transportation planning themes that are pursued by domestic cities with various population scales and also the differences in development themes among cities at home and abroad. Finally, the transportation development strategies of domestic cities under such planning objectives are summarized. Generally, conclusions in this paper could be used as references for comprehensive transportation system planning by a variety kinds of cities in our country.
