Development of Intelligent Terminal for Safety Monitoring of On-Road Van Transportation

This paper presents an on-board system for safety monitoring of on-road van transportation, which is achieved by on-board intelligent terminal, wireless mobile communication and monitoring center. The intelligent terminal includes master unit and detecting unit. The master unit equipped with an integrated GPS receiver mainly receives and processes GPS data for getting van's position and speed information. The detecting unit collects real-time status data of the van compartment, and carries out alarming when compartment door is illegally opened or destroyed, to ensure transportation process safety. It is proposed that a new method using ambient light sensor in the detecting unit to gather the status of the van compartment should be used. The design of the terminal's hardware and software is described. On-road experiments have demonstrated the efficiency and applicability of the developed terminal.
