Abstract
Based on the summary of correlation models and influence factors in prior researches, the concept of correlation between intersections was expanded, considering both signal progression and geometric design coordination. A new influence factor for intersection coordination called capacity imbalance factor (CIF) was introduced. The sensitivity of influence factors, including distance, CIF and saturation degree, were investigated based on a large number of micro-simulation tests using VISSIM. The operational characteristics under different scenarios were analyzed from performance indexes, such as delay and travel time. According to the simulation results, it was found that saturation degree is a deterministic factor, and with a CIF smaller than 0.4 or larger than 0.6, coordination of geometric design should be considered. Finally, the factors were categorized into two groups and a generalized empirical method for signal grouping was proposed.
