Determination of Traffic Accident Parameter by Video Technology
Publication: International Conference on Transportation Engineering 2009
Abstract
Traffic accident parameter determination is one of the most important topics in the domain of traffic engineering. In the past decades, continuous efforts have been devoted into the research and development of traffic accident parameter determination methods. Thus, many models have been put forward. However, all of them are based on the brake marks, thrown objects and so on. Therefore, the identification results are generally inaccurate due to the uncertainties of system input, including road surface friction coefficient, collision model and the geometric center of vehicles. Upon the urgent requirement, a novel method is proposed to extract that vehicle movement track, real-time speed and other parameters through video data collected by large-scale construction of video surveillance equipment. In this method, background separation, vehicle characteristics identification and background-video coordinate translation are modeled and discussed. Compared with traditional methods, this proposed one obtains significant efficiency in error decrease, which has been proved by the experimental result. Because such processes as road surface friction coefficient determination and collision model selection are omitted, which provide an outstanding prospect for its uses in traffic accident reconstruction.
