A New Method of Functional Classification and Layout Planning for Rail Transit Hubs

Publication: International Conference on Transportation Engineering 2009

Abstract

In China, the rail transit construction has been in a stage of rapid development and rail transit networks have been formed in some metropolises. Operations of the rail transit network essentially change the original public transportation situations, forming a new hub system with different function and classification. Considering the metropolitan transportation characteristics in our county, a functional classification method for the rail transit hubs under the network situation is firstly studied from the aspects of guiding urban land use and sustainable transportation development; moreover, the Central Place Theory and Fractal Theory are applied in the research of rail transit hub system structure, and a reasonable ratio model of different functional rail transit hubs is provided. Then, the relationships between the different functional rail transit hubs and the city central system and the transportation networks are analyzed. Finally, utilizing the two-stage hub layout design method, the macro layout patterns of rail transit hubs for the different forms of cities are summarized, and a hub location model is provided with the optimization goals of maximizing the population and working location coverage and minimizing the distance to the public transportation corridor. This paper is referable in building metropolitan rail transit network and hub system architecture.
