Alleviating Crack Properties of Crack Alleviating Mixture
Publication: International Conference on Transportation Engineering 2009
Abstract
In order to alleviate the crack's generation and propagation problems that arise easily on the semi-rigid base course asphalt pavement and the asphalt overlay on the existing cement pavement, the designed crack alleviating mixture (CAM) was tested using three kinds of testing methods, which can test the crack resistance properties at the different temperatures and conditions of loading. The testing methods include the bending strain test; the MTS fatigue life test and the anti-reflection crack test. That flexural tensile intensity, the limited flexural-tensile strain, the breaking flexural stiffness modulus, the cracking times at the beginning and in the end are used to appraise the alleviating crack performances of asphalt mixtures. These alleviating crack performance testing results are contrasted with that of Chinese standard gradation AC-13F. Three testing methods, two kind of asphalt mixture's performance comparative test indicate that the resistance to rupture at 15°C, the fatigue resistance at 20°C and the anti-reflection crack at the medium temperature of CAM are higher than that of AC-13F. The CAM asphalt mixture can be applied to the semi-rigid base course asphalt pavement and the existing cement concrete pavement as binding course or the surface layer and obviously delay the asphalt pavement cracking compared to Chinese standard's AC-13F asphalt mixture, thereby extend asphalt pavement life.
