On Fractal Behavior of Road Surface Roughness
Publication: International Conference on Transportation Engineering 2007
Abstract
The fundamental concept of fractals and the fractal curves were introduced and the fractal characteristics were discussed for concrete, brick and soil road surfaces. A road roughness index was found to be appropriate for the quantification of road roughness. The resulted two characteristic features of irregularity and statistically self-similarity from road data analysis indicated that each section of the road elevation contour is a compressed scaling performance from its upper level scaled contour. Thereby fractal dimension D turned out to be a suitable index for the quantification of the complexities of road surfaces. Differences among three contrasting road types were found to be great, indicating a fractal dimension of 1.237, 3.435, and 14.610, respectively, for concrete, brick and soil road.
