The State Bridge Management System under the Development of Modern Transportation

Publication: International Conference on Transportation Engineering 2007

Abstract

With the rapid development of the modern traffic, bridges, especially large and mega budges are not only "connections", but rather "lifelines". Referring to the whole China, large and increasing number of bridges can be regarded as a network which links all the roads. The urgent problem in this century is how to manage and sustain the bridge network with advanced information technology so that we can achieve the cost-effective optimal principle objectives under the premise of guaranteeing smooth flow of traffic. In China the problem is more complex, because Chinese bridges have the trend of growing older and older in common and their ages and parameters vary differently. Influenced by factors such as regional economic differences, different business model, the fund for repairing and maintaining the existing bridges is often difficult to meet with the transport needs. That is why many diseases bridges or even dangerous bridges are still on extended working. Deep studying on the basis of exist bridges' tests, evaluation also re-design, introducing performance-based unified design theory, considering American and other developed countries' bridge management method, adopting information method, this paper gives a systems of bridges health and management. First, this paper describes the main problems that required to be settled urgently. Then, it discusses the theory and implementation of the framework, and gives a brief introduction to some advanced countries bridge management systems. Finally, it prospects the further development and implementation of the system.
