New Cycle of the ASCE Journals’ Early Career Editorial Board

Publication: ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, Part A: Civil Engineering
Volume 8, Issue 4
The ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems in its two parts has introduced the Early Career Editorial Board (ECEB) as a mechanism to bring young members onto its editorial board. Based on the great success of the initial cycle of this pilot program, we are pleased to announce its continuation in a new cycle starting with this call for applications.

Scope

The ECEB program is intended to provide a pathway for early career individuals interested in pursuing an editorial leadership position with ASCE journals. The ECEB program gives members an opportunity to participate on an editorial board under the mentorship of the journal leadership.

Qualifications

The ideal ECEB member is within 1–3 years of having earned a doctorate degree. Participants in the ECEB program should be familiar with the peer review process, should have published at least one journal paper in the ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, Part A: Civil Engineering or Part B: Mechanical Engineering, should have some experience writing reviews, and should be members of ASCE or an ASCE Institute. At the end of their term with the ECEB, participants will have familiarity with selecting reviewers, resolving differences of opinion among reviewers, recommending editorial decisions, and promoting a journal.

Specific Responsibilities

The responsibilities of a member of ECEB may include one or more of the following or others to meet the needs of the journal:
Provide reviews for at least three submissions to the Journal annually.
At the request of and in consultation with the mentor associate editor, identify potential reviewers for submissions.
Act as a social media ambassador for the Journal or a section of the Journal.
Promote highlighted content such as in the case of Part A Editor’s Choice papers, ASCE SmartBrief articles selected from the Journal, award-winning papers, special collections, conference collections, and top downloaded papers.
Attend journal meetings when invited and take minutes.
At the discretion of the editor, assist with the coordination of special collections.

Term

The term of an ECEB member is 2 years with the possibility of renewal for a second term.

Application and Selection

The goal of the Journal is to bring two to four ECEB members onto the editorial board. Potential candidates are required to have at least six publications within the last 5 years, which may include their Ph.D. study dissertation.
Interested candidates should submit a resume that includes name, affiliation, detailed summary of qualifications, areas of expertise, and list of publications. The entire application should be a single pdf file and sent by email to the editor in chief at [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed by an ad hoc committee from the Journal leadership. Applicants will be informed about a decision within 2 months of their application.
Once selected, ECEBs for Part A: Civil Engineering will be listed on the journal masthead and in the editorial board membership of the Journal at https://ascelibrary.org/page/ajrua6/editorialboard.
We seek your help in bringing this opportunity to the attention of potential applicants.
