Technical Council on Forensic Engineering: Membership Invitation

Many projects and activities are under way in the ASCE Technical Council on Forensic Engineering (TCFE). New ideas and new members who are willing to contribute are always welcomed by each of the TCFE committees. TCFE maintains an Executive Committee, an Awards Committee, and six standing committees:
The Committee on Dissemination of Failure Information (CDFI) develops and implements means for disseminating accurate and complete information regarding the nature and causes of structural failures in civil engineered projects. CDFI also acts as a vehicle for coordinating and assisting in the dissemination of forensic engineering information generated by other organizations, both within and from outside ASCE.
The Committee on Practices to Reduce Failures (CPRF) develops objectives for change in the design and construction industry specifically targeted to reducing the incidence and severity of failures in civil-engineered projects. CPRF also works toward implementation of these changes and acts as a liaison between ASCE and other professional societies and organizations to pursue the prevention of failures.
The Forensic Practices Committee (FPC) works to enhance the competent and ethical practice of forensic engineering. FPC develops practice guidelines, seminars, tutorials, and conference sessions aimed at elevating the understanding of competent and ethical practice by professionals engaged in the investigative and judicial arenas.
The Committee on Education aims to improve the practice of civil engineering by promoting the study of failure case histories in educational activities. The committee develops course materials and acts as a source of referral for educational materials with forensic engineering emphasis.
The Committee on Forensic Investigation develops and defines procedures for conducting forensic investigations on constructed facilities.
The Publications Committee reviews manuscripts, technical notes, and discussions submitted to the Council for publication in the Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities and is responsible for publication of papers sponsored by the Council.
All TCFE committees plan to meet during the Sixth Forensic Engineering Congress in San Francisco, October 31–November 3, 2012. If you plan to attend the Congress, this would be an excellent opportunity to attend TCFE committee meetings and initiate membership with the Council.

Upcoming International Forensic Engineering Conferences

Abstract submittal deadlines have expired for the following events, but please consider attending these highly recommended conferences and congresses sponsored by the international forensic engineering community:
Sixth Forensic Engineering Congress: Gateway to a Safer Tomorrow (American Society of Civil Engineers), San Francisco, October 31–November 3, 2012. See description of the Congress in my Editor’s Note in the May/June 2012 issue, or visit the Congress website: www.asce.org/forensiccongress.
Second Congress on Forensic Engineering and Fifth Congress on Collapses, Reliability and Retrofit of Structures (Italian Association of Forensic Engineering), Pisa, Italy, November 15–17, 2012. The IF CRASC ’12 Congress website is www.aifitalia.it/ifcrasc12/ifcrasc12english.html.
Fifth International Conference on Forensic Engineering: Informing the Future with Lessons from the Past (Institution of Civil Engineers), London, UK, April 16–17, 2013. The Conference website is www.ice-forensicengineering.com.

TCFE Committee on Education Plans Second Volume of Failure Case Histories

A valuable resource for educators and practitioners alike, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) monograph, Failure Case Studies in Civil Engineering—Structural, Foundation and Geoenvironmental has been revised and updated with new case histories. With the upcoming publication of the second edition, the Committee on Education will embark on a second volume of this popular committee product. Readers of this journal are encouraged to contact the Committee with any suggestions for an influential case history that should be included or if you would like to participate with the committee in writing a brief summary of the case, along with lessons learned from the ensuing forensic investigations.
Should you wish more information on TCFE committee activities, the conferences listed previously, or should you wish to discuss a potential paper for the Journal, please feel free to contact me, Kenneth L. Carper, Professor Emeritus, Washington State University, by telephone at (509) 592-5374, or by e-mail at [email protected].
