ICCREM 2018: Innovative Technology and Intelligent Construction

Safety uncertainties widely exist in every phase of construction projects, especially during the on-site building stage. To identify different kinds of on-site safety uncertainties, a four-level analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model is proposed based on China’s current construction industry standards. Then analyze the influence and frequency of level-4th (L4) factors, synthesized cloud model (SCM) is applied to sampling calculation program, with which both randomness and fuzziness can be jointly considered. Finally, a multi-factor assessment method (MAM) under fuzzy sets theory is used to assess level-3rd (L3), level-2nd (L2), and level-1st (L1) factors of on-site safety system. Such methodology not only avoids the limitation of filling in huge numbers of written documents, but also can realize the dynamic adjustment of system factors, and may significantly decrease the difficulty of on-site safety management and safety inspection. In addition, practical advices are put forward to avoid some limitations of standard.

The understanding of BIM varies among professionals with different disciplines and experiences. This study is conducted to fill the above gaps with statistical analyses and ranking comparison of data collected from an industry-wide survey in the USA. A common set of key BIMM indicators is first identified based on the perception of the USA practitioners. Then four hypotheses are proposed about the existence of perceived difference in key BIMM indicators in terms of professionals’ discipline, position, years of BIM-related experience, and number of BIM-assisted projects. Statistical analysis of variance is employed to test the hypotheses. Further investigation of the ranking of the key BIMM indicators will show the emphasis of BIM implementation. This study has both theoretical and practical contributions. Theoretically, this study offers empirical evidence to the underlying consensus and differences in BIMM indicators among USA professionals with different backgrounds, as well as quantitative justification to the focus of BIM implementation. Practically, the identified indicators and the comparison results can be used by practitioners to evaluate their own BIMM while gaining a more comprehensive view of BIM from different perspectives, and to further maximize their return of investment in BIM.

Smart construction is an important technology in the process of building a smart city. In recent years, big data has become a hot topic in the whole world. The application of big data technology in smart construction plays a significant role in promoting the construction of new urbanization. The concept and development of smart construction are introduced in this paper. The relationship between big data and smart construction is discussed based on the current development of Chinese construction industry and the difficulties encountered while applying big data technology in smart construction. Finally, the technical framework of big data technology in smart construction is also presented in this paper.

The use of artificial intelligent (AI) has increased in the field of construction engineering and management in recent years, mostly due to the potential of the technology for improving construction performance and efficiency. In order to achieving a comprehensive understanding of the research work on this subject, this paper conducted a bibliometric analysis and review of existing literature on AI focusing on the last decade. The authors selected the articles based on different categories of AI technology and published journals with an impact factor higher than 1.0. The search resulted in 273 articles, which were then categorized in order to systematize the research conducted over the years. The authors analyzed the selected articles from the perspectives of time the article was published, journals, research fields in construction domain, high productive researchers, and major AI techniques. In addition, this review concluded the current trends of AI application in construction and further identified the next step of a detailed systematic analysis of the selected literature from the perspective of its research fields in construction domain to come up with more meaningful results that could bright the future usage of AI in construction related research.

Construction sector of Pakistan has rapidly developed with a higher growth rate of 9.05 percent during the period 2016-2017. However, a poor record of completing the projects in allocated time, cost, and with desired results is observed. One of the reasons for such poor performance is sticking to the traditional management practices that can be easily overcome with the implementation of building information modeling (BIM) tools. This study attempts to educate the stakeholders of the public sector of construction industry in Pakistan, as to how BIM can help them in minimizing the problems being faced during construction. BIM was implemented on a running construction project of a government hospital. The results were then presented to the key stakeholders, and they were asked to rank how BIM can help them in overcoming the problems. The stakeholders were generally convinced to use BIM on future construction projects, and agreed to take appropriate measures for BIM implementation in their departments. This research is expected to help in enhancing the performance of construction industry through BIM implementation.

As is known to all, the construction project is an extremely complex process. Relying on the syndromes, such as many parties, a large amount of investment, long project cycle, and so on, the project management process has many difficulties. Therefore, information management has always been an important part of engineering project management. Based on the overall objectives and requirements of the project information management, this paper constructs a framework of engineering project information management model based on BIM technology. The model framework consists of three levels, user layer, application layer, and data layer. Each participant enters the management model through the user layer, then selects different applications, and accepts the model data provided by the data layer, so that they can achieve the corresponding target management finally.

Building information modeling (BIM) is growing in popularity within the AEC industry. In an industry that is driven by the need for improved productivity and construction performance, it is important to understand how to better use tools like BIM. An improved understanding of BIM and its drivers will allow for more concentrated efforts on enhancing construction performance on BIM assisted projects. The main objective of this study was to conduct research on the academic and industry perspectives on BIM and construction performance. Qualitative interviews were conducted with individual academics, individual industry practitioners, academic panels, and industry panels. The findings of this study indicate that there is consistence among academics and industry practitioners in relationship to the performance indicators that are positively influenced with the use of BIM. Additionally there was consistence in the ranking of BIM maturity factors based on their importance in influencing construction performance. The findings of this study could be used as an indicator of how to improve the strategic implementation of BIM on projects and BIM education to better leverage this tool for enhancing construction performance.

On the basis of the information sharing and collaboration in the whole process of building industrialization, this paper presents the generic concept of using IoT-Cloud-BIM intelligent information management system as an essential application of the Internet of things (IoT), building information modeling (BIM), and cloud paradigm. It is evident that the precast component is the most unique and essential part in prefabricated buildings. However, the management of precast components remains inefficient and the productivity in the precast factory is low. This study aims to raise a new perspective on the precast component life-cycle management and to propose an intelligent information management system which will become an integral part of an innovative platform for prefabricated buildings on account of business-oriented features. In the system the life-cycle prefabricated component information as well as the building information can be traceable at any time and the schedule, cost, quality, and safety management is integrated.

Last planner system (LPS) in lean construction lacks the automation needed to manage complex projects. On the other hand, building information modeling (BIM) is capable of developing models that are compliant with LPS planning levels and faster visualization of errors. Prefabrication encourages just in time delivery while benefitting from BIM model capabilities. The objective of the study is to establish a framework to integrate LPS with BIM and prefabrication. Literature study and survey inferences were used to identify the potential to integrate. The framework aims to develop smooth workflows and an up-to-date LPS, boosting lean environment. It could be significant to the users of both BIM and prefabrication by having the potential to manage and coordinate progressive BIM models and less variable workflows for prefabrication.

Additive manufacturing (AM) technology (also known as 3D-printing) is a potentially revolutionizing power for construction industrialization compared with prefabrication. This study investigates the positive role of AM technology in the construction industrialization process through a systematic literature review. The paper first redefines the construction industrialization process in the Industry 4.0 age with reference to the industrialization process in the manufacturing industry. Next, barriers like high transportation cost encountered in the prefabrication process are pointed out by comparing with state-of-the-art AM construction technologies. Finally, the possible combination of advanced technologies including cyber-physical system (CPS) in the future development future of AM in the construction industry is reviewed. This paper is expected to facilitate further research and application of this technology.

The large amount of CO₂ produced in the building sector has a huge impact on the environment. The promotion of industrialized buildings is an important way to save energy and reduce emissions. However, due to the late start of China’s building industrialization, the research on carbon emissions of industrialized buildings is still insufficient. Building information modeling technology (BIM) can rely on parameter model to realize the sharing and transmission of building life cycle information, which opens up a new avenue for the study of building carbon emissions. Therefore, based on the wide review of previous literature, this study firstly divided the life cycle of industrialized buildings, then analyzed the carbon emissions within each stage, and built the parametric prototype system of life-cycle carbon emissions calculation based on BIM technology. This system will provide the basis for further calculating carbon emissions of various types of industrialized buildings so as to explore the carbon reduction space and ensure a low-carbon development of building industrialization in China.

Based on Web of Science and CNKI databases, this paper analyzes the current status of BIM research by using the method of bibliometrics. In order to screen all BIM-related articles, periodicals with search keywords as “Building Information Model” or “Building Information Modeling” or “BIM” are searched respectively in each database, and exported in EndNote and Refworks formats. Besides, VOSviewer, a document mapping software, is used to analyze the search results and make it visualized. Following the map of analysis for co-authors and keywords both at home and abroad, this paper systematically illustrated the well-known experts, hot areas, and research prospects in BIM research as well as the problems and shortcomings in the existing research. Through the analysis, it can be summarized that (1) BIM has gained increasing importance in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry; (2) The hot topic related to BIM research are focused on mobile and cloud computing, laser scan, virtual reality, and big data. This paper provides important guidance for BIM researchers to better learn about BIM research area.

Green building is a developing trend of contemporary architecture. BIM technology has also gradually developed in recent years. Combining BIM technology and the ideas of green building, analyze the effectiveness of BIM technology in the design stage and construction stage and its effect on green building. Take the museum of modern art in Taiwan as an example. First of all, the concept of BIM technology and green building are explained. Secondly, we analyze the effect of combination of BIM modeling and other physical software on green building during design phrase and achieve the goal of reducing waste and saving resources by using virtual construction and construction progress measurement and payment during the construction phase. Finally, we find that BIM technology has a positive role in green building.

This paper is aimed to improve the management of urban construction science and technology research projects (hereinafter referred to as S&T projects) from the view of the post evaluation research. The analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy synthetic evaluation methods were combined to be utilized to establish the project performance evaluation model. There were 25 Wuhan City urban construction research projects that were selected to be applied to the empirical analysis. The result shows that two indicators which included “technology values” and “economic benefits” have an important impact and possessed good project performance, while the three indicators which include “project acceptance”, “academic value”, and “social benefits” should be strengthened to improve the generalization and application. The research findings could be benefit for the construction science and technology research project administration department.

With the rapid development of computer technology and network technology, the informatization of the architecture engineering construction (AEC) industry is continuously improving. Meanwhile, BIM technology has brought a strong impetus to the development of the construction industry. However, for our country, BIM technology is still in its infancy. The application of BIM technology in the construction industry is still an important issue. Recently, the assembly construction has become the trend of the modern construction industry. By summarizing recent researches on the application of BIM technology in prefabricated building, this paper analyzes the advantages of assembly architecture and BIM technology, then explores the application of BIM technology in fabricated architecture.

Construction industry has played an important position in Chinese economy and its market scale is expanding. However, the productivity of the construction industry is still very low and the waste of labor and materials is very serious. Construction industrialization is an irresistible trend and effective means to solve the problems in construction industry. So the paper integrates lean philosophy and lean tools into construction process to establish a lean construction system to improve the quality and efficiency of construction industry in the background of construction industrialization. The paper also makes suggestions on the key points for successful deployment of the system, so as to promote the overall competitiveness of construction enterprises and realize green development of construction industry.

Based on the application of ALLPLAN software under BIM platform, focusing on ALLPLAN outline dimension, reservation and pre-burying of rebar, and collision detection design application, analyze document data and logistics list, obtained advantages and disadvantages of ALLPLAN design platform, to provide support and further promotion of BIM platform application in prefabricated buildings.

With the continuous development of building information technology, the adoption of building information modeling (BIM) technology has increased considerably, and the contemporary construction industry has gradually shifted from labor-intensive to technology-intensive. At present, construction cost management is still in an extensive and experiential management mode in China. There are some problems such as inaccurate allocation of construction resources and ignoring the refined, dynamic, integrated management of construction cost. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the refined management of construction cost (RMCC) in the architecture industry and formulate a systematic and scientific construction cost management system, which could improve the management level and ability of the construction and promote the development of the architecture industry effectively. In this paper, BIM technology is applied to the cost management of construction projects. By exploring the existing problems of construction cost management in China and combining with the application value of BIM, this paper analyzes the applicability of BIM applied to the RMCC and makes the application system of RMCC based on BIM. Thus it promotes the application of BIM in the refined management of construction cost.

With the rapid development of building industrialization in China and some other countries, it is necessary to reconsider the allocation of profit in construction supply chain in the context of building industrialization, since new stakeholders are involved and new risks are generated. Shapley value is widely used in profit allocation because it is mathematically easy to be processed. In traditional Shapley value allocation, only marginal contributions of players are included, yet the investment and risk borne by them also need to be considered. This paper reviews the related methods of calculating weights in allocation and provides a weighted Shapley value allocation focusing on the special properties of building industrialization. Examples are presented to show the practicality of this method and to illustrate that enterprises outside coalition can influence the profit allocation within a supply chain, which benefits learning that applying weighted Shapley value contributes to encouraging innovation as well as promoting building industrialization and the whole construction industry.

The birth of 3D printing technology has led to the vigorous development of intelligent building. China’s 3D printing construction industry started lately and developed in chaos, but its potential is huge. In this paper, the diamond model is used to analyze 3D printing construction industry from six aspects, such as production factors, demand conditions, enterprise strategy and market competition subject, related industry, development opportunity, and government behavior. It points out the bottleneck of industrial development, and puts forward countermeasures and suggestions for its healthy and sustainable development such as combining the upstream and downstream of the industry, increasing the investment in scientific research, and establishing a sound system.

Industrialization of the construction industry is the direction of change in the mode of building production, so it is imminent to promote the development of industrialization of the construction industry in China. The Chinese government put forward different policies for the development of industrialization of the construction industry in different stages of industrialization of the construction industry. In this review, we describe current researches on the policy of promoting the industrialization of the construction industry in China, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of nine kinds of research methods, and put forward some policy recommendations to promote the industrialization of buildings. In addition, we provide a framework for policy study on industrialization of the construction industry using policy bibliography.

Since construction industrialization can transform construction to an energy-saving, environmental friendly, and economical way of production, the State Council and some other departments of China issued a series of policies to stimulate the development of construction industrialization. However, it is difficult but critical to measure the effectiveness of these policies. This paper proposed a quantitative evaluation approach to the effectiveness of construction industrialization policies, based on five policies passed from 2014 to 2017. These policies were first quantified through text mining. Then, the policy modeling consistency (PMC) index was employed to inform the effectiveness and efficiency of the studied policies. Findings of this paper can be used as references for policy making in construction industrialization.

The governance of smart community is formed with the joint participation of government departments, society, community committees, property departments, and non-governmental organizations. This paper constructs the model of multi-agent behaviors by using the game theory, discusses the multi-agent cooperation in the process of community governance, and analyzes the relationship of multi-agent from the behaviors of each participant. The paper shows the features of the multiple subjects in the community governance. It is concluded that achieving effective governance plural community competition equilibrium of the game can promote smart community sharing and conclusion.

Considering the new situation of fierce market competition and anti-corruption, it is an unavoidable problem that how to build clean construction closely following the overall development for enterprises. Therefore, to further strengthen the construction of integrity control in engineering consulting enterprises is of important significance. In the background of “Internet Plus”, based on the way of literature review and analysis of BIM application value, this article makes a statement around the engineering consulting enterprises’ corruption risk, the prevention of it, and related problems, besides it also put forward some suggestions of control in construction industry.

In this paper, a modified recycled concrete for cold area is prepared by using recycled aggregate of construction waste. The effects of freeze-thaw cycles on the durability of recycled concrete were studied by freezing and thawing cycle test to simulate repeated freezing and thawing in cold regions under low temperature in winter. The variation factors of the test are aggregate size, regenerated aggregate content, design porosity, and composite modification. The evaluation indexes are intensity loss rate, mass loss rate, and relative dynamic elastic modulus. Different test combinations were used to make test blocks. After 25 and 50 cycles of freeze-thaw cycles, the influence of different factors on the indexes of modified recycled concrete is analyzed, and whether it meets the requirements of frost resistance in industry standard is studied.

Since that the collaborative management, planning, and resource scheduling schemes cannot be formulated synchronizly in the present project planning management system, a multi-objective project planning and scheduling integrate models constructed, which is targeted at optimizing project cost and completion time under the resource constrains. Moreover, competitive cooperation plan is introduced in the model and the task can be spitted conditionally with the key resources constrained. At the same time, a NSGA-II algorithm is designed, in which a three-dimensional chromosome containing chromosomes of task priority, cooperating task, and cooperating partner is constructed which meets the requirements of multi-objective collaborative decision-making coding scheme. And in this algorithm, the selection, crossover, mutation, and other evolutionary operations are also designed. Finally, a project example is used to verify the correctness of model and the validity of algorithm.

The fundamental aim of development is to promote the well-being of the people’s livelihood. China’s economy has entered a period of the new normal, and the speed of urbanization is increasing. With the constant improvement of the level of urbanization, China’s economy develops rapidly, and the living standards are also continuously improving. Based on the usage of ordinary least square and instrumental variable estimate, and the research sample—Chinese Household Income Project Survey (CHIP) 2009, this paper does a research on effects of urban residents’ income growth caused by city scale’s expansion. The results show that city scale’s expansion plays a significant role in income growth of urban residents from different industries, especially in labor-intensive industry, highly monopolized industry, non-tradable industry, as well as urban residents from secondary industry. In consideration of these findings, this thesis holds that China’s urbanization process should be further accelerated, and the development strategy and policies of the large cities should continue to be adhered to in the current and future years.

In order to solve the problem of building waste disposal and reduce the exploitation of natural aggregate. In this paper, the recycled aggregate, which is processed by the broken construction waste, is used to prepare the modified recycled concrete for cold area. The experiments were designed for different combinations, according to the percentage of the quality of recycled coarse aggregate for the quality of recycled aggregate concrete (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Orthogonal test is done to take 9 groups of experimental, and 5 kinds of the proportion of recycled aggregate were compared in each group. The rule of compressive strength, flexural strength, and permeability coefficient of recycled concrete is studied under different proportion of recycled aggregate. Finally, by comparing the experimental date, the reasonable proportion of recycled aggregate for the modified regenerated concrete is obtained.

The emergence of wisdom site has become a global phenomenon over the years as a consequence of rapid breakthrough of science and technology. According to the dominating features and practical requirements in the construction phase, wisdom site has been increasingly promoted as a vital approach for ensuring mega project success through the coordinated management of the dispensed execution of a program at the organizational level. Nevertheless, practicing it in construction projects is a continual improvement process that requires relevant tools. This paper introduces “Internet +” advanced technology represented by BIM, cloud computing, intelligent devices, and big data, expounds how to display the role of network organizations including the Internet, Internet of things, and sensor network by technical means such as artificial intelligence, sensor technology, VR, and 3D printing. With the tool, numerous parties can better utilize the management approach, and organizational effectiveness for delivering projects can be improved constantly, so as to realize the management goal of green, intelligent, low-carbon, and intensive construction project sites.

Customer demand analysis is the basis of the development of the intelligent system of project safety management. The customers’ requirements are only understood more accurately in the process of product design, so that designers can acquire the goal and direction of products development, providing reliable decision-making basis. This paper considers the features of uncertainty and fuzziness of customers’ preference, supposes an analysis method of customers’ dynamic requirements in product life-cycle management. By utilizing genetic algorithms and fuzzy cognitive map, the feedback mechanism of requirements between products and customers are established. A case study of engineering project safety intelligent management system development is provided to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the requirement analysis method and feedback mechanism.

With the upgrading of traditional building methods, BIM technology is becoming more and more popular in the construction industry. At the same time, with the advantages of small pollution, lead time, and high efficiency, the assembly building has become a new direction of the development of the construction industry. This article describes the characteristics of prefabricated buildings, analyzes the application of BIM in prefabricated buildings from the stages of design, production, construction and operation, and maintenance, and demonstrates that using BIM technology can improve the efficiency of prefabricated building design, improve the production and management of prefabricated components, simulate the construction process, and improve the maintenance management level. Finally, come to the conclusion that the use of BIM technology can realize the lifecycle management of prefabricated construction and further optimization of production, reduce costs, shorten the construction period, promote the development of prefabricated construction.

In the recent years, industrialization has been changing the construction industry and attracted attention from both researchers and practitioners. However, few studies have attempted to map the global research on the industrialization of the construction industry. This study conducts a review of global construction industrialization research, 2,401 papers from the Web of Science SCI/SSCI database were collected and analyzed. The results indicated that the most significant research topics in construction industrialization research occurred primarily in (1) construction project, (2) building material, (3) system and component, (4) performance and behavior, (5) technological innovation, (6) construction process, and (7) construction method. The purpose of this paper is to make insights into certain characteristics of construction industrialization research and identify the global research hot topics and trends which provide a guideline for assist researchers and practitioners to establish future research directions.

Steel structure construction is highly recognized in construction industry for its high qualities, such as light weight, high intensity, short duration, and energy saving, and is widely applied in engineering construction industry. With the rapid development of science and technology, it faces new challenges in quality, cost, and other aspects. How to enhance the competitiveness of steel structure construction has become one of the hottest topics not only in the development of construction information in China, but also all over the world. In our study, we effectively combined BIM technology with steel construction to implement the information management in construction material, providing a new management mode for the supply and site installation of steel structure material.
