Abstract
The object of this investigation was to determine the magnitude of the head losses caused by the conveyance of solid-liquid mixtures through circular conduits of variable slopes. The study concentrated on the problem of transporting the mixtures in complete suspension, i.e. so that none of the solid particles settle to the bottom of the pipe. Even within the transport problem of complete suspension, a distinction between homogeneous and heterogeneous suspensions must be made. A homogeneous suspension is possible only if the solid-distribution is uniform over the pipe cross section. In the case of heterogeneous suspensions, a concentration gradient exists. For the case of homogeneous suspension, head loss equations were developed and experimentally verified.
