Abstract

A solution by the reduction method is presented for the buckling problem of an orthotropic rectangular plate uniformly compressed in the horizontal direction with one side clamped and the other side simply supported, and with three types of end supports. By the reduction method, the buckling problem of a plate is reduced to the problem of an isotropic bar that is in a state of vibration and tension. As a result of this reduction, a simple equation for the calculation of the nondimensional buckling coefficient is derived, and the numerical values of this coefficient are calculated. Results of the calculations are presented in tables and graphs for three types of end supports. Comparison shows the results to be in good agreement with the exact values.
