General Computer Analysis of Beams
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 90, Issue 3
Abstract
A comprehensive method is presented for the machine solution of a number of technically important beam problems. The beam may be uniform or nonuniform in cross section, and the elastic properties may be constant or may vary from section to section. The same computer program may be used for the calculation of deflections and stresses in beams under static or dynamic loading and for the determination of buckling loads, natural frequencies, and mode shapes. The governing system of differential equations is put in a form that is especially convenient for numerical integration and that, as the integration proceeds, produces explicit point values of the quantities that are of immediate interest to the engineer. Thus, the engineer is not required to compute the desired quantities by further operation on, for example, the computed values of the deflections. The procedure may be applied readily to certain plate problems and, on enlargement, may also be applied to certain shell problems.
