Engineering Management—University Extension

Abstract
The burgeoning field of engineering management is an education phenomenon of the post-World War II era. University extension, nationwide, have been the traditional suppliers of engineering management programs for practicing professionals. Free-standing evening courses speak to the needs of individual engineers seeking specific management training at minimum cost. Certificate programs in several engineering management fields are offered through after-hours courses given in urban centers, many of these in cooperation with the recognized technical/professional societies in cognizant fields. Short courses, full-time offerings of three to five days, answer the needs of engineer managers in industry and construction. More expensive than an after-hours course, the short course is expected to deliver more intense management education for the time invested. The UCLA Engineering and Management Course, a cornerstone of the industry now in its 24th year, is described in detail.
