Abstract

Today the engineering profession has been considerably criticized for being insensitive to the needs of the general public when designing new engineering projects. The engineer has been accused of being a tool of the client, behaving as a robot, turning out plans, calling for the cheapest construction for the client, and ignoring the effects on the existing environment. Yet this is far from the truth, applying only to those few engineers who design with little thought in order to turn out plans with a minimum of effort for maximum profits. It must be said that most of the so-called environmental damage was caused by ignorance, and it must be emphasized that the effects of past mistakes are now just being understood, not only by engineers and scientists but also by the general public.
