Criticism of the civil engineering profession provoked by the environmental impact of engineering projects, particularly on the natural resource component of the total environment, comes at a time of increasing need for engineering work to serve a growing population. It is not the intent of the authors to explore how justified such criticism may be, or how the engineer may escape it, but rather how he can avoid contributing to it personally.
