Chapter 4
Main Wind Force Resisting System—Envelope Procedure
Publication: Wind Loads: Guide to the Wind Load Provisions of ASCE 7-22
Abstract
This chapter provides examples for determining wind loads on buildings using the Envelope Procedure. There are several limitations on using this procedure, primarily that the building must be a low-rise building. A building must meet the following to qualify as a low-rise building: enclosed, partially enclosed, or partially open building; mean roof height less than or equal to 60; mean roof height does not exceed the least horizontal direction; and the building does not have an arched, barrel, or unusually shaped roof. The pressures determined in these examples are limit state design pressures for strength design. The MWFRS design wind pressures for a large, one-story commercial/warehouse building are determined using the Envelope Procedure.
