ABSTRACT
The optimal road speed limit design plays an important role in improving travel safety and efficiency. To achieve a balance between road operation efficiency and travel safety, this paper studies the method of setting a reasonable speed limit for urban roads. According to the galloping theory and wave flow theory, two calculation models for maximum speed limit evaluation are established. A regression analysis algorithm with the four influencing factors including road entrance and exit density, lane width, isolation facilities, and road surface conditions are further proposed and calibrated. The proposed methods are verified in detail by massive field data collected in Zouping, China. Results show that the proposed method has a good feasibility and performance and can improve the road travel capability on the premise of traffic safety. This paper provides technical support for speed limit design, traffic design, and management departments.
