Assessing the Coupling Coordination Relationship between Urbanization and Intensive Land Use: A Case from Chengdu, China

Publication: ICCREM 2021

ABSTRACT

The rapid economic development in China has driven accelerated urbanization, intensifying the demand-supply conflict of urban land resource. This study used principal component analysis (PCA) model to extract the main components of urbanization and intensive land use. Then, a coupling coordination degree model was established to measure the coordination of Chengdu’s urbanization and intensive land use from 2009 to 2018. The results show that the urbanization and intensive land use of Chengdu presents a coupling relationship, which fluctuates and finally reaches a favorable coordination. The coupling relationship is mainly affected by economic urbanization and land output benefit. Chengdu should develop high-tech industries to boost its economy and delimit the red line of urban development to ensure the efficient use of incremental land in the future. Finally, this study shed light on directions for Chengdu’s sustainable land use.
