ABSTRACT
An intersection is a typical collision hot spot in the urban traffic network. At an intersection with many pedestrians, the conflicts between pedestrians and traffic mixing flow and turning vehicles are more serious. The design and consideration of pedestrian crossing time are critical in counteracting the negative influence of conflict between vehicles and pedestrians. This study is aimed at an intersection with relatively large pedestrian volume and traffic flow in a core area of Xi’an and conducts a multidimensional analysis of pedestrian crossing time. Based on the combination of essential data investigation and simulation results, the impact of different pedestrian timing designs on intersection delay and fuel consumption is analyzed. The results illustrate that the variation trend of delay is very different under the diverse pedestrian crossing design. The late start and early end method would be more likely to reduce delays and fuel consumption at the proposed intersection.
